An Ecosystem Approach To Wildlife Photography

So often as wildlife photographers, we’re tempted to think of our subjects in isolation; “I’m going to go and photograph whales” for example. It’s easy to forget sometimes that these creatures exist as part of a larger ecosystem with relationships with their habitat, predators, prey and each other. Making an effort to bring this “ecosystem thinking” into the field has definitely benefitted my photography over the years.

A recent trip to the northeastern part of Vancouver Island illustrated this once again. I discovered mysterious disturbances at the surface and encountered seagulls, seabirds and whales acting in unusual ways.

Watch the video and see how once I understood what was happening, I managed to get some great shots not only of the whales but of the whole story…
