Enter the drone…

One of the latest crazes in the photography world is the use of remote controlled helicopters, or drones, to gain a new perspective on everything from traditional landscapes to extreme sports. Sizes, payload capacity and of course prices vary widely but some of the most popular models are capable of carrying a small camera that produces very decent photo and HD video captures. Santa felt it was time for me to join the drone frenzy this year and I’ve been chasing the kids around the yard with it learning how to pilot this amazing little machine.

For a photographer like myself who enjoys coastal scenes, these drones open up a huge realm of possibility, allowing perspectives normally too dangerous or impractical to capture. I recently took my drone out to a remote beach at sunset and put it through it’s paces…

Hovering over a reef with surf pounding below – a shot too dangerous to even attempt with a regular camera.
A shot from around 200m (over 600ft) of our wild coastline on Vancouver Island.

Of course, there was still time for a regular camera shot just after the sun set on this incredibly fun photography outing.

Regular old cameras still work pretty well too 🙂
