I find winter is a great time for reflection and innovation, if I can’t be out in nature with my camera of course.
Since opening my online print store I’ve been thinking a lot about how else to share my images. It seems to me that our social media driven, rapid scrolling world is selecting for nature images of hyperbole and conflict taken by photographers locked into a never ending cycle of frantic self promotion. There are almost daily news stories about the negative impacts this is having on the natural environment and subjects themselves. This is antithetical to my philosophy of nature photography! As I explain in my artist statement, I’d like my images to inspire mindful reflection and empathy for nature. This is difficult to do when rapidly scrolling through some feed or other, not to mention reinforcing the whole negative cycle!
Prints of images foster a much slower and thoughtful appreciation of their subject and provide the viewer with many of the benefits of being in nature without having to be there at that particular moment. Purchasing a fine art print of an image that really speaks to you is a special experience, can enhance your home or office decor, but can be cost prohibitive for some. For this reason, I’ve been busy putting together collections of fine art cards that are now available for purchase in the print store. I print each card myself on archival quality photo paper and each comes individually packaged in a protective cellophane wrap with an envelope included. With their lower cost and ease of sharing, my hope is that my images can reach a wider audience in a format that complements their intention.
