Artist Statement
Have you ever seen a child so captivated by something that they stop, remain perfectly still and study it?
Really, deeply study it?
Drink it in, taste, and savor it with all their senses to the exclusion of all else?
They ask questions and make connections; sometimes profound.
When it came to nature, I was that kid. Perhaps you were too.
My fascination endured through university culminating in graduate school but then, as for many, more pragmatic concerns prevailed; childhood dreams and ambitions consigned to dormancy.
For me, practicing coastal wildlife and nature photography has reanimated those early enchantments; allowed me to capture scenes and moments so I can once again look at them.
Really, deeply study them.
Ask questions.
I sit on some remote shoreline with my electronic marvel of modern technology aimed at nature, hiding it from the rain lest its delicate innards get fatally, terminally…damp.
Rocks, trees, water, creatures; it seems so simple. But that water can toss those trees up this beach as if they were mere twigs…that tree has stood for a thousand years…that hummingbird’s heart is beating sixty times a second…
You’ll find this empathetic and mindful approach to coastal nature photography reflected in my images. They’re simple, serene even. Intimate perspectives fostering soothing reflection and equanimity. They transport us from our busy lives and invite us to lose ourselves once again in nature; just like the kids we once were.

Highly visible with their bright yellow beaks, these large birds of prey are amazingly agile; often snatching prey from mid-air or under the surface of the ocean.

Starfish, fish, anemones and their tide pool dwelling brethren add wonderful colour to the coastline. These amazing creatures thrive despite waves and weather; all in a never ending twice daily cycle.
